AMONG ROOTS

The rehabilitation of an old masonry volume that remained abandoned for years, eventually becoming part of the natural growth of a tree.

The intervention preserves the original finishes and materiality of the existing structure, intervening only where necessary. The roof was removed to gain height, while new doors were incorporated to promote cross ventilation.

A horizontal north-facing lightwell frames the roots and trunk of the tree that extends through the roof, making visible from within what had grown over the architecture for years. The result is a space where the old, the new, and the natural coexist without competing.
